You'll be adhering two patterned papers together to form each page of the book to make them sturdier. (Tip: decide now if you want to make this a horizontal or a vertical oriented album because it might impact how you cut and adhere your patterned papers.) I prefer to use patterns that carry at least one color over from the previous page to the following one; I also prefer to vary the patterns as I turn the pages of my book. For example, if I use a floral with pink and blue and green in it on one page, I might choose to use a pink heart pattern on the following open spread, and then choose a black and white geometric print for the next spread as a way to "break up" the busyness. Hopefully, that makes sense. (Note: you can also use a different pattern for every single page if you prefer, like I did in the book I made for my daughter. I do think that using the same pattern across both pages of an open spread creates a nicely cohesive look though.)
5. Once you're happy with the flow of pattern and color, adhere patterned paper back to back to create your pages.
6. Go ahead and adhere patterned paper to the outside and inside covers for the front and back of your book. If you have it on hand, red line tape is the best adhesive for the outer covers to make them more durable.
7. Punch the holes for your binder rings. For my books, I punched the holes about 1.5 inches from the top and bottom and about 1/2 inch in from the edge. There's no particular rule to follow except to make sure you leave enough room that the hole doesn't tear through to the end of the paper/chipboard. I think it's best to punch one regular page's holes then to use that as a template for the remaining pages and the covers. (Tip: a heavy-duty punch like a crop-a-dile tool works best for this; that chipboard is tough to punch using a handheld office-style version.)

If the paper is super busy, you may want to put a mat of thin black or white around the photo to break up that edge. 10. Adhere photos to the album pages as desired. Re-punch holes if any of them were covered during your photo placement.
11. Thread pages onto the binder rings. I find it is best to do one ring at a time to make sure I don't miss any of the pieces. Snap binder rings shut and flip through your album to make sure everything is in the right order; make any changes you want before continuing.
12. Go through the album and add journaling spots to any areas where you plan to include writing. I really like to use my pocket-style cards for this. I also often cut strips into white cardstock or subtle patterned paper and adhere it for journaling spot. You'll notice in my "Mom" album that I even used some pinking shears to add a decorative edge to those journaling strips for visual interest.

Using a simple black pen is a great choice, but some people like to go back with a colored ink pen and underline words or add other decorative elements. If it helps you to jot your journaling down first on a scrap piece of paper to make sure it will fit or you get the words just right, then definitely do that. If it helps you to have lines on which to journal, then feel free to add those with a pencil that you erase later or with stamping ink as a decorative and useful element. (Tip: go ahead and write your journaling for the whole album now. If I go ahead and add embellishments before journaling, I sometimes run out of room to write or talk myself out of writing the things I had planned.) (Tip: if the binder rings are getting in your way of journaling, then remove the page to journal and replace it when finished.)

Now, you just need to add the fun items - embellishments. Here's where you can experiment with paperclips, twine, ribbon, stickers, sequins, and more.
